Our Mission
THE TYLER SCOTT GOLDBERG FOUNDATION is committed to
(a) preventing children from suffering injuries arising from the operation of personal
watercraft by serving as a vehicle for legislative change, a source of targeted
education in our schools, and an advocate for personal watercraft design change,

and

(b) easing the suffering of those whose lives are impacted by the types of traumatic
injuries typically associated with personal watercraft accidents through providing
financial support for relevant medical research, enabling and expanding the scope
and quality of services in trauma centers and pediatric intensive care units, and
assisting families in coping with the many difficulties encountered when their child
sustains similar injuries
.
Legislation
*Currently, Florida law allows children who are only 14 years old  to
independently operate a personal watercraft (PWC).  The Tyler Scott
Goldberg Foundation is working closely with government officials on the
local, state and national level to change these laws to protect Florida's
children from the dangers associated with the operation of a PWC at
such a young age.  For more information on model legislation, please

here to view the National Association of State Boating Law
(NASBLA) Model Act for Personal Watercraft.

2009 Florida legislative update

Currently 16 states require the minimum age to operate personal
watercraft to be 16 years old. Florida is not included.

The Medical Community
The American Academy of Pediatrics's Committee on Injury and Poison
Prevention recently published an article noting that the use of personal watercraft
(PWC) has increased dramatically during the past decade as have the speed
and mobility of the watercraft.  A similar dramatic increase in PWC-related injury
and death has occurred simultaneously.  No one younger than 16 years should
operate a PWC.  The operators and all passengers must wear US Coast
Guard-approved personal floatation devices.  Other safety recommendations are
suggested for parents and pediatricians.  For more information, click
here.
The Coast Guard is urging parents to ensure their children get educated about
boating safety before operating or riding a personal watercraft. Adults who rent,
lend, or borrow personal watercraft must know and follow Federal and State
boating laws, and heed the Coast Guard’s “You’re in Command” message to be
responsible for the safety of all those who operate or ride.  For more information,
